Craft Artist of the Week Kristy Hollingsworth from RosySheepBoutique

http://www.etsy.com/shop/Knit2Felt

This week I would like you to welcome Kristy Hollingsworth from RosySheepBoutique. She likes to take a string of wool and two sticks, shape the string and mold it string into something beautiful yet useful, novel yet familiar. Welcome!

1.What would you like us to know about you?
I live in southwest Michigan with my dog and three cats. I have on one daughter and one grandson. I have been creative all my life to varying degrees. Sometimes the creative me is quiet other times it’s very restless.

2.When did you discover Etsy?
I discovered Etsy at the beginning of 2011.

3.What prompted you to open an Etsy Shop?
It all started with an eReader that I had received as a gift. I wanted to find a cover for it and could not. Even the company that sold the units did not have a cover to fit this particular size unit. I thought if I was having such a problem others more than likely were too. Since I’m an avid knitter and felter it was only logical that should be my medium. After that my mind to work on a solution and I came up with a design in a rather short period of time.

4.What do you sell?

I sell what I like to refer to as functional art. My pouches are beautiful and they’re also a solution. If you buy a tablet, an eReader or an iPhone you'll want to have some form of a protective barrier for it. My pouches and sleeves offer that solution by my knitting with a double strand of yarn the wool felts up nice and thick so it becomes a dense padding and it helps keep the moisture off and free of dust especially the open ports that some units have. Now I’m not saying that you can leave it out in a rainstorm or drop it out a window and still have an operational unit but what I am saying is that with reasonable care it will provide a reasonable barrier to the external elements.

http://www.etsy.com/shop/RosySheepBoutique
http://www.etsy.com/shop/RosySheepBoutique

5.How did you come up with your shop name?
The first name, Knit2Felt, came to me when thinking about what to name my shop. It made sense albeit literal. I recently changed my name to Rosy Sheep Boutique. The story behind it is cute. I found a sheep figurine, she has rosy cheeks so she became Rosy and my mascot. She even appears in some of my
shop photos and I have created a logo which happens to look just like her, cheeks and all. Eventually she’ll have her own column in my future blog.

6.How would you describe your shop?
I strive for my shop to be warm, inviting and friendly like you’re walking in off the street and I’m showing you around. Casual.

7.What inspires / motivates you?
Everything. I see potential in almost everything. I know it sounds over the top but it’s true.

8.How has Etsy changed your life?
Etsy has changed my life by urging me to do my craft consistently, giving me an avenue to share it and giving me the tools to succeed.
9.Where else can we find you? (Do you have a website or blog outside of Etsy?)
I do not have a website or blog yet. Both are in my future plans as is Pinterest. I’m a one person shop so it’s mostly about the product right now. I do have a FB fan page,www.facebook.com/knit2felt

10.Is there anything else you would like to share?
Be true to yourself, be who you are. If you are an artist and a creative or whatever you’ve been given.
Honor your life and your gift by using it.

Featured Craft artist of the Week: Nicola Baker from Handmade by Nicola Baker

http://www.etsy.com/shop/nicolabaker1

Good morning everyone!
Today I would like to introduce Nicola Baker owner of Handmadeby Nicola Baker. She creates art pieces and items for your home that are one of a kind, each of the pieces she makes are individual and made at a high quality, giving you something unique every time so stop by her shop at Handmade by Nicola Baker. If you do order from her, she has offered our readers a 15% discount on purchases. The code is included in this interview , so keep reading!

1.What would you like us to know about you?
My name is Nicola Baker and I live in the North East of England,UK in a place called Durham with my husband and our two young sons.
Durham is a lovely city, but what has struck me over the years is that all of the shops are the same and what they sell is generally the same. In fact not just in Durham, in most of the UK. That’s why over the past ten years I started to make more and more of my own pieces of art – it’s just lovely to have something different in your home. So, initially from making things for my own house, I started to sell my work in shops and galleries.

2.When did you discover Etsy?
I discovered Etsy September 2011, however it wasn't until earlier this year that I actually started to work on my shop listings, participate in Teams and promote it. It took a while to understand the different things you need to do to help promote your shop. Initially it seemed daunting, reading about favourites, circles etc. I suppose anything new and different is daunting, but people on the Teams are very helpful, ask a question and if anyone can help they will.

3.What prompted you to open an Etsy Shop?
For a number of years I have sold my work in galleries, shops and have participated in various craft fairs. Now that can be pretty limited to just where you live so I feel why can’t anyone, no matter where in the world have some lovely pieces of art, whether that be a gorgeous handmade paper bowl, some fabulous mixed media pictures for your home or as a beautiful gift or lovely individual handmade cards? That's why I decided to open my Etsy shop. There are so many beautiful shops on there, it's inspiring to see people doing something they obviously love and creative and actually making a living from it.

4.What do you sell?
I sell a variety of paper related products. From handmade paper bowls and handmade greeting cards to original art collages and art prints.

5.How did you come up with your shop name?
I sell different products, so felt I didn't want to narrow a shop name down to 'Paper Bowls by Nicola Baker' for example. I wanted a name to be able to act as an umbrella for a number of products, thus allowing me to add other shop sections. All my products are made by myself so the name Handmade by Nicola Baker was born.

6.How would you describe your shop?
In my shop there are lots of items for the home, ideal as gifts or for yourself.

7.What inspires / motivates you?
My products are inspired by textures, colours and techniques I have discovered mainly while travelling. My house is my canvas; sometimes I'm guilty of creating art that I would like to own, but hopefully that resonates with other people too.

Sometimes I have to take a break from making, whether it be for five minutes or for the rest of the day. I usually go and work on something else or catch up with my admin if the juices really aren't flowing! Some days a field trip is in order – to the library, an art gallery or just a walk to check out architecture, surroundings and just to clear my head and thought process.

I feel if I keep working on something and I'm just not feeling it then it shows in the end product. If you are making something just for the sake of it then it usually shows and as a maker you view that work differently. I just want to be the best I can be and to make the best products. I keep telling my 6 year old never to give up, just keep trying and you will feel so proud. So I've got to try, really!

8.How has Etsy changed your life?
Etsy has allowed me to be more focused and creative as I now have a shop front which I see daily and want to make it the best it can be. I now feel I am more in control of my business. I can see how may shop looks and rearrange it accordingly. When you leave your products to be sold in someone else’s shop they decide where to place your work and how much they will promote it.

9.Where else can we find you?
I have a blog
www.nicolabaker.com - My Blog shows people snippets of what's new in my shop, information which I have found which may be useful, and features some amazing artists.

You can also follow me on Twitter @nicolabakerart

10.Is there anything else you would like to share?
If you are having a bad day or a period where you are struggling with ideas or sales then view it as a bad period, nothing else. Don't dwell on it. As an artist you put so much pressure on yourself and self doubt can easily creep in, but without this self-critique would our products be the best they can be?

11.When you get a new idea, how long does it take you to execute and list it?
It depends on the product, it takes longer to make a paper bowl or a collage, so it can take around a week to make it and list it.

12. How much time do you spend on your shop take each week?
I spend around 20 hours on my shop. The time is taken up with coming up with new ideas and experimenting with them, making products, listing them, participating in Teams on Etsy and promoting items. Saying that, it actually could be more than 20 hours some weeks!

13. How do you promote your shop?
I have a blog and Twitter account. So far I have resisted Facebook, but I think now is the time to promote my shop on there.

14. How important is social media for your shop?
Don't underestimate the power of social media and how it can help your business. The world is our marketplace now and there's never been a better time to sell your work. The goalposts have changed – leaflets and business cards aren't as important as a good web presence and Twitter account. It's one more thing to learn and get to grips with, but those who do will find they not only build their sales, but accelerate them.
If you could offer your readers a 15% discounton purchases with this code - Blog15.

7.¿Qué te inspira /o te motiva?
Telas. Finalmente, me inspira mis hijas. Ha Elena, le encanta la moda y tiene ideas muy femeninas. Trabajamos juntas muy bien.

8.¿Cómo ha cambiado tu vida con Etsy?

Featured Artist of the Week: Nikki from ThisNThatbyNikki

http://www.etsy.com/shop/ThisNThatbyNikki

I would like you to meet Nikki and her Etsy shop: ThisNThatbyNikki. Her shop is, as she likes to call it, “Eclectic.” She offers a variety of items from handmade jewelry to crochet and cross stitch. If you love to shop for unique handmade items, then you should definitely stop by and check out her ThisNThatbyNikki shop.

Nikki recently opened her shop and wanted to offer all my readers a coupon for 15% Off her entire store! Simply make sure you continue reading!

1. What would you like us to know about you?
I am a serial crafter/do-it-yourself-er. I love to find new ideas and projects to work on. I then work on them obsessively until something else crosses my path, and then continue on. Interests outside the crafting world include gardening, camping, playing with my dog Watson, oh and my day job-- archaeology.
I have an inexplicable love for berry beads and this was my first attempt to make something fun and simple from them. It also happens to be the most favorite thing in my shop

2.When did you discover Etsy?
I have heard rumors of etsy for several years, but it wasn't until talking to my cousin (who just opened her shop CaribouClassics *not so subtle plug*) over the holidays that I really went and checked it out. So I guess my first exposure was January 2012.

3.What prompted you to open an Etsy Shop?
Like I said above, I love crafting, generally making gifts for family and friends. But after talking to my cousin, I thought if she can do it so can I. I then made a couple things and posted them, and promptly ignored the site for about a month, naively thinking that someone would magically see my items, think they were brilliant, and snap them right up. Once I realized this wasn't how it worked, I got serious.

4.What do you sell?
As my name suggests, I sell a little bit of this and that. Right now my store is stocked with jewelry and some crocheted items. I like reusing, 'upcycling,' vintage beads in my jewelry and right now some of my favorite items are in the berry bead collection. After experiencing how very swamped the jewelry market is however, I am planning to focus on other types of handcrafts including my crocheted purses. New items (coming soon) will include made to order crocheted lace and cross-stitch embellishments.

5.How did you come up with your shop name?
My shop name is based on my blog name, of course I only posted on my blog once, so that is neither here nor there. But essentially I was searching for something that wouldn't tie me down to any one product. I wanted room to experiment and an excuse to have an eclectic shop.

6.How would you describe your shop? Eclectic.

I made my first knitted/crocheted purse over 12 years ago for a friend and brought that back for my crocheted purse section. This one is one of my favorites

7.What inspires / motivates you?
I am generally inspired by nature. I love being outside and being in my garden. Inspiration for my items in my shop comes from just living life. I like to see beautiful things and I try to recreate that beauty in my creations. If I see something in a magazine or on pinterest I think, 'hmm, how would I make that,' and I go from there.

8.How has Etsy changed your life?
Etsy has given me a reality check. I knew there were a lot of talented people out there, but I realized that the competition is real. There are some seriously talented people on etsy. Not only in what they create, but their ability to photograph, market, and network astounds me. It certainly is a lot more than making some cool stuff, taking pictures, and making money. The main thing I have learned is that while there is competition, there are awesome people out there and almost everyone on etsy is willing to help their fellow crafters out.

9.Where else can we find you?
You can also find me at:
www.facebook.com/pages/This-n-That-Creations/286432114746551
pinterest.com/goldienp/
and if I get my act together and actually use my blog:
this-n-that-n-the-other.blogspot.com/

Tiger Eyes!

10. Is there anything else you would like to share?
Crafting and etsy should be fun and it certainly can be. Do what you love and love what you do.

11. Tips:
If you want to sell on etsy, make sure you know your local laws and ordinances on business licenses and such. It can be a reality check if you find out after you open your cute shop, that you also have to do the real business side of things.

Research what you want to make, pay attention to trends, keep your shop stocked, join some teams, and don't forget to take a break.

12. When you get a new idea, how long does it take you to execute and list it?
I probably spend 15-20 hours a week on my shop. Either creating, photographing or marketing.

13. How do you promote your shop?
I primarily promote through teams, other peoples blogs, and facebook. I just met up with people from my local etsy team and everyone had business cards so I ordered some of those too. I plan on doing a craft fair or two to build up a customer base and use etsy to stay in touch.

14. How important is social media for your shop?
Social media is important, because currently my shop only exists online. I get several views a day from sites outside of etsy. If people are following your shop back from another site, then you are more likely to make a sale.

Any coupon code, and or sales going on in your shop that you would like to share? I will offer a 15% off coupon for your blog followers under BlogFeature15.
